STAR weekend
By now STAR, the Seniors Transition and Adjustment Retreat, is a well-established Woodstock tradition. Seniors go away for four days with staff to prepare to leave Woodstock, to think about their college destinations, to explore issues they will face as they become more independent, and to enjoy the last few days with their friends. There is always much laughter, plenty of running around, numerous people (including staff) thrown into the swimming pool, and a generally good time had by all.
On the programme this year, as always, were sessions on preparing for college destinations, during which staff and visitors from various countries were on hand to answer questions and to provide warnings and reassurances. Countries covered included USA, Canada, UK, Australia, and India. Everything was covered, from teaching styles to bank accounts, from dental care to driving licences.
Kelli Smith '98, who is currently earning her Master's Degree in Cross-Cultural Communication, came for the weekend to lead sessions on culture and hidden values and to facilitate a series of simulation games with the seniors. The senior class created skits based on transition scenarios which were both humorous and pointed. Key players in past year's STAR retreats, departing staff-members Darryl DeBoer, wife Jodie, and school guidance counselor Kevin Van Zee, led workshops on safety and limits, as well as sexuality and relationship issues for college-bound students.
A good preparation for moving on!
