Easter chapel
This year's Easter chapel was something of a spectacle. Counsellor Daniel Swanson conceived the idea of basing the chapel on the traditional Easter vigils, common in the Orthodox as well as other traditions. These demonstrate the themes of death and rebirth in various dramatic ways, including the use of light and darkness, the Easter morning cry of "Christ is risen", the lighting of candles, the showering of petals and the unfurling of colourful banners. At the significant moment in the service the curtains were opened and the way to the holy of holies was opened up, displayed on the stage.
Elementary students re-enacted the pilgrimage of the children of Israel and the crossing of the Red Sea, and led the dance when the resurrection was announced. Music of all kinds came from the High School choir, the Staff choir, the worship team, plus soloists and duets. The brass ensemble teamed up with the drums, bass guitar and accordion of the worship team to lead the celebration. We saw an enactment of baptism, courtesy of Aman John, who subjected himself to ashes and water in the cause of furthering understanding of this Christian rite of passage. Finally we thought about the two men on the road to Emmaus who only recognised the presence of Jesus when he broke bread - and we all shared bread with them, reminding ourselves that God is indeed with us.
Thanks must go to all of the dozens of people who worked hard to bring this service to life, and to Daniel particularly, for his vision and energy in making this Easter so special.
