Woodstock Community Cookbook

When talking to new staff, especially foreigners, a common topic is how difficult it is to cook a meal. While strolling through the bazaar one can see the colourful, fresh and abundant vegetable and fruit stands and when peering into Ram Chander or Sardarji's the shelves are packed with a plethora of food. But the hard part is creating something that is edible and 'tastes like home'.

The famous "Landour Cook Book" has gone through several editions, and is still in print. It stands proudly on many a Woodstock kitchen shelf. But every generation faces the same challenge, and has its own favourites. So, a while back, a few Woodstock women gathered together to talk about putting together their version of a community cookbook. They had a couple of goals in mind for the cookbook which included; using local ingredients, recipes that were both Indian and Western, and a document that people could access anywhere in the world.

The women gathered veg and non-veg recipes from staff on the hillside; the cookbook includes some of the community's favorites such as; Delicious Brownies from Sue Rollins, the Chophels mutton Momos, and Joie Burchell's Swedish Tea Ring.
