Pablo Picasso once said, “Sculpture is the art of the intelligence.” These meaningful pieces resonate with ideas. It’s been a month for sculpting at Woodstock. Grade 5 and 6 have been creating a multitude of wire sculptures in Adam Hubbard’s class. The expressions might seem familiar. If not, there’s more where these come from.
By sheer coincidence, Margaret Groff’s Upper Years’ class has also been sculpting 3-D art forms with another interesting medium – cling film and packing tape. Have a look at 2 different takes of the same art form.

Teuk, Grade 12 speaks about his group project created along with Deasyl, Bobby, Dechen and Mayuri.

“We had to make a 3 D sculpture that represented Woodstock in some sort of way. First we thought of doing something that represented the monsoon which is such a big part of Woodstock but the season didn’t last very long. We then decided to create a general outline of the Woodstock student. Our sculpture is of a student who is relaxing on the bench and looking at the scenery which is very beautiful.”
We had to wrap my body in cling film and then in cello tape. We had to do one body part at a time. We did a few layers. Then we’d cut it off and stick it together and start over. It took around 45 minutes to 50 minutes to work on one part and we had four people working at a time; 2 each on one body part. It took around 2 1/2 weeks to complete the whole sculpture. We’ve received quite a few comments!”

Reading a book

Tanya, Grade 10:We were assigned to do something that makes us all connected but makes us all different. We choose hands because hands are something we use constantly to greet each other and interact with one another. My hands are shaped like they’re holding the pages of a book and I painted it red to fit in with the others.

It represents my love for art

Anvi, Grade 9: My 3 D hands represent my love for art. I love painting so I splattered one sculpture with paint and draped the other in fabric. I want to study design. It took me two weeks to create these.

Abhimanyu, Grade 11: Our project was to make a group sculpture using packing tape. We decided to do hands; each hand represents our personality. One of my sculpted hands holds a football and the second one has pictures of my favourite video game characters. The theme was black, white and red…so I used red as the base and used black for the pictures and white for the ball.

Inspired by dance

Fiona, Grade 12. I love to draw so that’s why I used brushes on my sculpture. I wanted them to look rustic. The other hand is based on Kathak (a classical dance form). I used to do a lot of Kathak as I grew up so I thought about how I would dress up for Kathak. I picked up all the things that I did then…so I used the alta, the bangles and the ghungroos on my sculpture.
(Alta is red colouring used to decorate a dancer’s palms and feet. Ghungroo are little bells worn around the ankles.)

Hyeji, Grade 11: “I made two hands for my 3D art project because hands do a lot your work. I made the ‘V’ sign, I am a typical Korean and in one hand I use Korean writing to represent my nationality and the other is a fist.”
