Tucked away in a corner of the middle years school building is a class room where you can expect to find something intriguing happening all academic-year around. It’s Adam Hubbard’s art class. We caught him right in the middle of doling out print-making instructions. The energy levels were short of ear-splitting as Adam’s students vied for his attention between consulting him and presenting their creative pieces. End result: pretty unique and stark prints.

“This is a linoleum woodcut project I’m teaching my 8th graders. They basically start out by creating a drawing. I show them how to transfer the drawing onto a piece of linoleum. We’re using recyclable material; in this case linoleum flooring. They go through a series of working with cutting tools to carve out the designs they draw.

We then move on to an inking station. They take water based ink onto a roller and ink their linoleum cutouts or plates and then place a blank paper on top. Then they rub it so the ink transfers onto the paper, after which they peel it off. The image is created backwards.

We’re working with black and white first. Then we‘ll add more colors – multiple colors – and start playing with texture as well”.-Adam Hubbard, Middle Years Art Teacher

“This is my first year at Woodstock. I used a picture as a base for my linoleum cut. Then I transferred it on to a piece of linoleum. Mr Hubbard helped me add ink onto it so that the only parts that will turn out white are the ones I have cut out with the carving tools. My design is from a photo that I took on my first day in India. This is the India gate. My mom and I were driving and I took a cool photo of it… then I got a little creative with it.”- Ava

“I wanted to do something European. I think Europeans are very cool. I designed a bar scene. But I’m not very satisfied with it. I’d like to carve out some more and print it out one more time and improve the end result. I’ll probably make 3-4 prints,” says Harsh.

Knema says she enjoying the project especially the rolling. “I’ve already made a print and it turned out well. My design is based on eyes. One represents evil, the other good. When we were young, we had to draw an eye and draw what represents us inside the eyeball of the eye and so I kind of got my idea from that.”

“My print is of a playground which is the most famous playground in South Korea. It is in front of an art college and is visited by staff and students of the college and is a very popular place”,  says Gi ju.

    Amazing work! I remember doing lino prints in school as well. It is a great combination of planning, manual dexterity and learning / understanding high contrast art. It would be wonderful to see a virtual exhibit of the final prints on the website.
