12 Nov In Memory of Dr James Barton
Woodstock School mourns the passing of Dr James Barton (born 6 August 1938), a deeply respected educator and leader who served the school with distinction for more than two decades. Dr Barton passed away on 7 November 2025, leaving behind a lasting legacy of academic excellence, compassion and spiritual guidance.
Dr Barton’s association with Woodstock spanned two distinct periods, his first from 1977 to 1983, during which he served as Chemistry Teacher, Head of Science and Headmaster, and his second from 1988 to 1999, when he was High School Dean and Vice Principal for Academics. Alongside his wife, Mrs Willi Barton, he dedicated much of his life to nurturing generations of students and strengthening the school community.
In a Board Resolution passed in March 1999, James and Willi were commended for having ‘served the school and community with great love and dedication’. The resolution highlighted the qualities that defined Dr Barton’s years on the hillside, citing his professional expertise, spiritual leadership and unwavering support for students, staff and colleagues.
Dr Barton will be remembered as a brilliant teacher, thoughtful mentor and compassionate leader whose influence extended far beyond the classroom. His faith, wisdom and warmth left an indelible mark on Woodstock’s history.
He is now reunited with his beloved Willi, who passed away last year. Together, they embodied the very best of Woodstock’s spirit: service, care and lifelong commitment to community.
