26 May Woodstock girls take basketball title
Woodstock’s Grade 7 and 8 girls’ basketball team won the inaugural American Schools in India Activities Conference (ASIAC) at the weekend, held at the American Embassy School in Delhi. The Tigers won all four of their pool games to secure a seeded slot in the semi-finals, where they beat the American Embassy School of Delhi 18-6.
In the final they saw off the American International School, Chennai, by 14 points to eight. The team also took the best sportsmanship award, which had been their aim prior to the tournament. The girls were coached by drama teacher Bethany Okie and head of PE Steve Lukkonnen, who praised the team for their determination and hard work.
Mrs Okie said the team had been inspired by watching a basketball movie The Pistol and trained exceptionally hard prior to the tournament, working on their conditioning. Team member Prapti Joshi said the experience had been amazing. “It was a real confidence booster for us particularly after we didn’t do so well as a team last year. We practised really hard and we were very humble before the tournament, but confident.”
Woodstock’s boys’ team finished third in the competition, while the school also entered a team in the swimming championships at the conference.
