Summer at Woodstock – Growth Through Outdoor Adventure

The course is designed to teach new skills while fostering personal growth through real-world challenges. Students will learn technical outdoor skills—such as tent pitching, cooking, and first aid—while also developing essential soft skills like leadership , effective communication, conflict resolution amongst others. The course emphasizes on how adversity in nature can build confidence, resilience, leadership, and lead to effective teamwork. Students will engage in open conversations and reflections, using outdoor experiences as opportunities to explore emotions, share ideas, and strengthen their ability to adapt and grow as individuals and team members. Importantly, the course allows for the skills gained over the two weeks to translate into everyday life.

· Self-reliance & Confidence: Through activities like backpacking, tent pitching, and cooking outdoors, students will gain the confidence to manage their every day and learn to rely on themselves.

 

· Resilience & Perseverance: Tackling challenges such as the overnight hike and learning so many new skills will help students build resilience and adaptability.

 

· Leadership & Group Dynamics: Collaborative tasks like cooking and gear planning encourage teamwork and help students develop leadership skills while learning to support each other and resolve conflicts effectively.

 

· Problem-Solving & Adaptability: The course offers opportunities to make decisions and solve problems on the go, encouraging flexibility and quick thinking in changing outdoor environments.

 

· Emotional Intelligence & Reflection: Group reflections provide space for students to share their thoughts, explore emotions, and build a deeper understanding of themselves and the group.

 

· Leave No Trace (LNT): Students will learn how to interact with nature in a sustainable way, developing awareness of environmental responsibility.

MR. VISHAL NEGI

MR. VISHAL NEGI

Vishal Negi is a certified Trip Leader (National Outdoor Leadership School), Nature Guide (Nature Guides Academy) and Wilderness Emergency Medical Technician (Aerie Backcountry Medicine). Deeply committed to outdoor education, he believes the natural world is the most powerful classroom – where concepts of self-discovery, sustainability, leadership and a meaningful connection with nature are best cultivated through lived experiences. Vishal has trekked extensively across the Himalayas and led diverse groups through the Kashmir Valley, Ladakh, Sikkim, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Nepal. Since 2019, he has served as an outdoor educator at Woodstock School’s Hanifl Centre for Outdoor Education and Environmental Studies. He currently holds the role of Head of Operations, where he continues to shape impactful, experience-based learning programmes. Outside of his professional work, Vishal enjoys quiet walks in the forest, strength training at the gym, and plotting his next move on the chessboard – practices that reflect his belief in maintaining a healthy balance of mind, body and spirit.
MR. VIPUL VASHISTHA

MR. VIPUL VASHISTHA

Vipul Vashistha is an Outdoor Educator with extensive experience in experiential learning, mountaineering, and wilderness medicine. He began his career as a mountain guide in the Western Himalaya and later completed a diploma in Outdoor Education in Germany. He also served as a Field Instructor with Outward Bound, leading backpacking and canoeing programs on the U.S. East Coast. Vipul now teaches backpacking, leadership, and wilderness medicine at the Hanifl Centre for Outdoor Education and Environmental Studies, an outreach of Woodstock School. His experience includes numerous Himalayan treks and mountaineering expeditions, and he has contributed to the Indian Mountaineering Journal. He is a certified Wilderness Emergency Medical Technician (WEMT), fluent in English and Hindi, and plans to pursue a master’s degree in Outdoor Education.
